The Salem Observer Subscription Book, n.d.

Envelope contains a leather-bound volume listing subscribers to The Salem Observer, a "literary and commercial paper," devoted to moral and literary essays and short reviews of "fashionable authors." The paper would also provide notices for improvements in agriculture, manufacturing, and mechanical arts. The editor of the paper was Benjamin Lynde Oliver, Jr., who proposed the creation of the paper in 1818; it was first published in 1823. Oliver was Nathaniel Hawthorne's college tutor.
